Professor Graham Smith has resigned as medical director of the Royal United Hospital Bath trust, as an investigation is launched into possible misuse of NHS resources to treat private patients.

A statement from the trust said this was not linked to recent accusations of falsifying waiting lists, which are currently being probed by the Department of Health.
