The Conservatives have claimed there is a huge disparity in how much primary care trusts are spending on management salaries.

Figures obtained by the party from trusts ranged from£10.68 per weighted head of population in Somerset to£40.56 in Kensington and Chelsea PCT.

Shadow health minister Mike Penning said: 'These figures show that£1.1bn of taxpayers' money is being wasted on huge NHS management bills. If one trust can pay managers a certain salary, then why are fat cat managers charging so much more money to do exactly the same job in other trusts?'
