The Scottish Executive has conceded that information-gathering in the NHS must improve following the second damning report in two months.Audit Scotland's first overview on the performance of the NHS said the service was unable to show whether record investment was making a difference to patient care. It follows a report from the audit committee of the Scottish Parliament, which made similar criticisms.

A high turnover of staff, poor physical environment and pressure on beds will all be assessed under a new project to improve the safety of acute psychiatric wards, announced by the National Patient Safety Agency. Forty trusts in England and Wales will take part in the programme to improve safety for mental health service users.

The National AIDS Trust has condemned the government for 'breaking' its United Nations pledge to fight HIV nationally. In a report delivered to the UN this week, NAT says the UK has broken key 2001 commitments, including establishing national HIV- prevention targets, and calls for a cross-departmental strategy to stem 'spiralling' infection rates in the UK.
