Trent strategic health authority chief executive Alan Burns has been appointed to work on implementation of the national IT programme.Mr Burns will lead on work to engage clinicians in the programme, one of the roles carried out by deputy chief medical officer Professor Aiden Halligan who was last week appointed to run the Irish health service.

More than 94,000 people have responded to the latest national TV and poster nursing recruitment campaign, according to the chief nursing officer's bulletin.More than 1,000 of the respondents were former nurses enquiring about return-topractice courses.

The DoH is inviting comments on the draft NHS injury costs recovery scheme, which it hopes will recover an additional£150m per year.The NHS would be able to recover costs from insurance companies for treating patients in all cases where personal injury compensation is paid.

Manchester United footballer and asthma sufferer Paul Scholes has launched the Department of Health's annual flu immunisation campaign.This year's campaign focuses on people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, as well as those aged 65-plus.

NHS Direct has launched a translation service which will enable non English-speaking patients who phone the service.Bowne Global Solutions, which won the contract, said NHS Direct currently handles about 500 calls a month from callers who do not speak English.

The annual report from the government's independent advisory group for sexual health has urged the government to move sexual health up the agenda to address soaring rates of sexually transmitted infections, high levels of teenage pregnancy and to reduce nationwide variations in abortion provision.
