Melanie Walker has been appointed to a new post as director of social care at South West London and St George's Mental Health trust, which she will take up on 1 December.

Currently assistant director of mental health at London regional office, she will provide social care leadership across five boroughs served by the trust.

Toni Letts will be chair designate for Croydon's new primary care trust, to be formed from the three Croydon primary care groups and the Croydon part of Croydon and Surrey Downs Community trust - currently the subject of local consultation. At present she is chief executive of Croydon YMCA Housing Association. She is a Labour councillor.

Diane Barker has joined NHS Direct as the new general manager for Cheshire and Wirral. A former nurse supervisor in Bolton, she joined NHS Direct as a senior nurse adviser in April 1999 when the service first went live in Greater Manchester.
