Mark Britnell (above), previously an executive director at Central Middlesex Hospital trust, has been appointed executive director for operations at the University Hospital Birmingham trust. He takes up his appointment at the end of this month.

Louise Shepherd moves from Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull trust, where she was deputy finance director, to join the Countess of Chester Hospital trust as finance director. Mark Cooke has been appointed deputy finance director (business development director) at Birmingham Heartlands. He was previously an operational performance manager at West Midlands regional office.

Nottingham Community Health trust has appointed Sonya Yates as director of nursing and quality. She moves from the NHS Executive, where she was nursing officer, purchasing and prescribing.

York University professor of economics Alan Maynard has been appointed chair of York Health Services trust.

Sir Terence English, who retired as consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Papworth Hospital in 1995, has been appointed a non-executive director of the trust. Sir Terence carried out the UK's first successful heart transplant in 1979. He was president of the Royal College of Surgeons from 1989 to 1992.

The Scottish Office has announced a number of non-executive appointments: James Findlay, managing director of Radio Forth, joins Lothian health board; former nurse Christine Henderson joins Caithness and Sutherland trust; Audrey Bowker, previously a member of Grampian local health council, joins Grampian Healthcare trust; former deputy head teacher Mairi Brown joins Inverclyde Royal trust; and Labour councillor Irene Graham, and James Thomson, a former business finance director, join Victoria Infirmary trust.
