A report in the BMJ has warned that mental healthcare is becoming reinstitutionalised.

Researchers found that the number of forensic beds and supported housing beds had increased in England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain.

The number of psychiatric hospital beds had been fuller in five countries, but reductions only outweighed the number of additional places in two.

Involuntary hospital admissions and the numbers in the general prison population have also risen.

The study examines to what extent reinstitutionalisation is taking place and how much this is affected by different countries' attitudes to risk containment.
