Both during and after the general election, two themes concerning NHS managers emerged. First, they should leave doctors and other clinicians to get on with their jobs, without interference. Second, where MRSA is not tackled, the chief executive in question should find themselves in the courts on charges such as corporate manslaughter (Opinion, page 17, 2 June).
I find these approaches contradictory. The main reasons for the spread of the bug are surely a reduction in cleaning specifications and clinical staff not washing their hands. The latter suggests the need for more management of clinicians not less.
It seems depressing that senior managers (or their representatives) do not seem to perceive the need to make the arguments publicly.
