A hospital consultant is suing the Scottish health trust that made her redundant after a five-year dispute.

Dr Pamela Harper wants to be reinstated by Tayside University Hospitals trust or, failing that, accept more than£1m compensation, the equivalent of the 20 years' salary she would have been expected to earn by retirement age.

Consultant geriatrician Dr Harper was suspended five years ago by the former Perth and Kinross trust following concerns about her 'working methods'.

After an investigation her suspension was lifted in 1998 when she agreed to a retraining programme.

She was then offered the post of consultant with the Tayside trust, which she said had not been validated by the national panel on consultancy appointments, as is usual for such posts in Scotland.

'I regarded this action as never having been offered a job because the job description was totally unacceptable.'

A trust spokesperson said that when neither an acceptance nor a refusal of the job was received, the trust was left with 'no option but to terminate employment'.
