A lack of workforce planning has led to wide variations in the way nurses are deployed across Scottish hospital wards, according to an Audit Scotland report published today.Planning Ward Nursing: legacy or design reveals that too few staff are dedicated to making sure that the right number of nurses are in the right place at the right time. Audit Scotland calls for better information to support workforce planning and for the introduction of measures of the quality of patient care.More than a third of the 271 wards surveyed had below the planned number of nurses in post and the report also showed a rise in expenditure on bank and agency nurses from£25m in 1997-98 to£35m last year.
