Activity in the NHS has remained virtually static despite the extra investment pumped in by the government.According to this year's hospital episode statistics, there were 12.26 million finished consultant episodes during 2000-01 - up just 60,000 on last year.Hip replacement operations went up by 400 (0.6 per cent) to 70,300.But eye lens operations rose by 12.6 per cent to 237,500.The number of private patients treated in NHS hospitals fell by 18,400, while emergency admissions rose by 30,000 to 3.86 million.
