Two prominent NHS managers were recognised in the new year honours list.

Barbara Stocking, regional director of South East region and former regional director of one of its predecessors, Anglia and Oxford region, was made a CBE.

So was Frank Burns, chief executive of Wirral Hospitals trust.

Ms Stocking was a fellow of the King s Fund College and went on to direct the King s Fund centre for health services development.

Mr Burns was seconded to the NHS Executives information management group to produce the latest information management and technology strategy.

Professor John Ashton, regional director of public health in North West region, also received a CBE, while president of the Royal College of Physicians Professor George Alberti was knighted for services to diabetic medicine.
