Mentions of Clostridium difficile on death certificates in England and Wales rose by 69 per cent between 2004 and 2005, to 3,807, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The rate for deaths involving C diff in males increased from 23 to 38 per million population in 2005. In females the rate increased from 23 to 39.
