Mental health chief executives are feeling less confident this month. Almost all scores are down.

Confidence in commissioners' understanding of mental health and achieving foundation status by the end of 2007-08 is down again after growing steadily. Also taking a hit is confidence in having enough therapy staff. This score has hit a new low of 6.60.

Confidence is also up for achieving national standards on hospital cleanliness - this is gradually rising.

There is also broad agreement that some mental health trusts will not reach foundation status; 67 per cent of respondents think that at least five will not achieve this.

But chief executives are divided on whether black and minority ethnic service users are over-represented in their services.

The next mental health barometer will appear in December.
