Moorfields Eye Hospital is set to open a hospital in Dubai, HSJunderstands.

The foundation trust is hoping to sign a lease to operate in the United Arab Emirates in September and open its doors to patients in April 2007. The trust will operate as a franchise in Dubai and be known as Moorfields Eye Hospital, Dubai.

The organisation - which has an international reputation for its specialist eye services - has already successfully franchised in England. Moorfields now operates out of 11 hospitals across London and the South East, offering patients specialist services, and it is hoping to expand its range of services further in hospitals across the UK this year.

The Dubai operation has been given the go-ahead by foundation trust regulator Monitor. Chair Bill Moyes said that after some 'robust' discussions with Moorfields' management board he was now happy for the trust to open in Dubai.

Mr Moyes said that the Moorfields deal to provide overseas services as part of its investment had been evaluated and the regulator had concluded that the financial risk to the organisation was low. Moorfields has also given assurances that the services delivered under the deal would not breach the trust's cap on private patients or affect its provision of mandatory services.
