The national child measurement programme has increased the numbers of school children between the ages of four and 11 who have had their body-mass index measured to 80 per cent.
The figures for 2006-07 show that 23 per cent of four and five year olds and 32 per cent of 10 and 11 year olds were overweight. The highest prevalence of obesity was in London. The lowest were in the South West and South East Coast areas.
