Non-executive director at County Durham and Darlington Acute Hospitals trust John Dixon and his wife are volunteers for the Imperial War Museum's war memorials inventory.

I have always had an interest in military history and this work also involves social and family history.

The museum is especially interested in the architecture of the memorials and wanted to document all war memorials. A group based on the local history societies did this work in Northumberland and we became involved when it was extended to County Durham.

Aside from documenting the memorials, we wanted to gather the names of those who died in service. We set up the North East war memorials project. We have about 3,200 memorials with 7,000 photos listed on the database.
