An Agfa imaging system linked to the patient administration system of the Royal Hospital Haslar, in Gosport, means that images taken at military bases in Cyprus and Gibraltar can now be reported immediately.Before Agfa Computed Radiography was installed, radiologists had to fly out to the bases to look at the films - or these had to be flown back to the UK.Radiologists can also manipulate the images as they would on any other picture archiving system.

University Hospital North Durham has opened a 24-hour, open-access computer area for the personal use of staff as part of the government's Improving Working Lives scheme. Ian Palfreeman, director of human resources, said he expected staff to use internet shopping and banking facilities.

Microsoft and MSN have launched a public services channel with access to online government and healthcare services.The site includes links to the three main health sites - nhs. uk, NHS Direct Online and the National electronic Library for Health.
