Nigel Bell, chief executive of the NHS Information Authority, left on 30 September saying he had completed the challenge for which he was appointed (HSJ news, pages 6-7,4 October).

A survey for the NHS Information Authority has found that awareness of the authority and its role has risen slightly - from 54 per cent in 1999 to 66 per cent.But it still gets less than half marks for the services it provides to NHS organisations (HSJ news, page 4, 13 September).

Four health communities are taking part in six-month trials of online referrals for patients with suspected cancer.Two different methods of sending referrals will be tested: a web-based product from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and an expanded module of the EMIS GP system.
