Robert Naylor, chief executive of University College London Hospitals foundation trust, has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of his services to healthcare.
He was among tens of healthcare professionals to be honoured in the Queen's New Year's Honours List.
Sir Robert said: 'I am deeply honoured by the award, which has come as a complete surprise. My time as chief executive of two great teaching hospitals has been an absolute privilege and I am personally indebted to all those wonderful people who have worked with me for the past two decades. The NHS, despite its critics, is one of our most cherished institutions and I am proud to be associated with it.'
Several NHS leaders were made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), including NHS West Midlands chair Elisabeth Buggins; Terry Hanafin, previously chief executive of the former Essex strategic health authority and now Modernising Medical Careers chief operating officer; Ann Lloyd, head of the Welsh health and social services department and chief executive of NHS Wales; Professor Valerie Lund of the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital; Professor David Knowles, senior associate at the King's Fund; Leicester GP Dr Angela Lennox; SANE chief executive Marjorie Wallace; and nurse and King's Fund programme director Sarah Waller.
Among those made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) were HSJ columnists Luton and Dunstable foundation trust chief executive Stephen Ramsden and East Lancashire primary care trust chief executive David Peat.
Other OBEs included West London Mental Health trust chair Professor Louis Smidt; NHS Quality Improvement Scotland chief executive Dr David Steel; Portsmouth Hospitals trust chair Michael Waterland and Dr William Wilkins, clinical director of integrated medicine and consultant physician, Bro Morgannwy NHS trust.
More than 20 managerial and clinical healthcare staff were made Members of the Order of the British Empire.
