Dr Neil Goodwin CBE has been appointed as interim director of the Nuffield Trust and will work to develop the future strategy of the charity's programme of research.

Having previously held a number of chief executive positions in the NHS including St Mary's hospital trust in London, Dr Goodwin has also undertaken primary research on chief executive leadership and written chapters on strategy and public health leadership.

Professor Dame Carol Black, chairman of the trustees at the trust, said: "This is a very interesting time for the NHS and I welcome Neil Goodwin to the Nuffield Trust to help strengthen our capability for policy analysis and debate through the trust's various activities."

Dr Goodwin will remain director of the development consultancy GoodwinHannah while undertaking his new role. A permanent director is expected to be appointed later this year.
