Chief nursing officer Chris Beasley has announced a review of mental health nursing.

The review will examine the role of nursing in delivering reforms such as the draft mental health bill, the public health white paper Choosing Health, and the Department of Health framework on Delivering Race Equality.

Ms Beasley said the review was needed because the context in which mental health services are run had changed significantly in recent years, with new priorities developing, as well as lessons from serious incidents.

She said the time was right to take stock of these changes and 'provide mental health nurses with a new direction and clear future role'.

Other areas for the review include race equality, health promotion, child protection and the development of non-medical prescribing as well as themes such as personalised care and choice.

National Institute for Mental Health in England director of mental health nursing Dr Neil Brimblecombe will lead the review, which is due to report by the end of the year.
