DONALD REID is the chief executive of the Association for Public Health. He was previously executive director of the Health Education Authority, specialising in programmes for youth and smoking prevention. He is an international consultant on tobacco control strategies.

What is the first thing you do when you arrive at work?

Turn on my PC and stare disbelievingly at all messages timed 10pm or later.

What do you like/dislike about your job?

Like: the opportunity to express APH members' opinions on a wide range of topics - without having to worry about upsetting people. Dislike: the fragmentation of the public health movement in the UK.

What do your colleagues think of you?

A skilled self-publicist.

What is your proudest achievement?

Helping to create the first successful annual public health conference in the UK, open to all.

What is your tip for success?

Be single-minded about where your organisation is going.

What was your worst business mistake?

Spending pounds4,000 to hire a marquee for an exhibition which brought in pounds1,000 in income.

What do you do to relax?

Play golf worse than anyone I know.

The One-Minute Manager.

How would you like to be remembered?

As someone who helped to unite the public health movement.

Which person in the NHS do you most admire?

Philip Hunt - especially for his communication skills.

What would make the single biggest improvement to the NHS?

For it to become a truly health-promoting organisation.

Philip Hunt would be a great choice if you could do it from the Lords.
