Welcome to this HSJ supplement on skills development, sponsored by Skills for Health, looking at the progress of the organisation a year into its life.

It has been a year of considerable change. The fledgling NHSU has had its wings clipped after the review of arm's-length bodies merged it into the National Institute of Learning, Skills and Innovation. Meanwhile the demand has grown for training that crosses disciplines, job boundaries and even organisations. And big workforce issues like pay modernisation, the Gershon efficiency review, equality and diversity and the pension consultation are all having an effect on how people view their own jobs and those of their staff.
