The inquiry into how the NHS handled complaints about the poor conduct and performance of disgraced gynaecologist Dr Richard Neale will be chaired by Suzan Matthews QC.Ms Matthews is deputy chair of the criminal injuries compensation appeals panel.

Dr Neale, who was trained in the UK, was struck off in Canada in the early 1990s after being involved in operations which killed two women.He came back to work for the NHS where he was struck off by the General Medical Council in July 2000 after botching dozens of operations.The inquiry panel will also include Christina Funnell, founder and chair of the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance and former chief executive of the National Eczema Society, and Derek Caldwell, former chief executive of Stockport Acute Services trust who retired from the NHS in 1999.
