Letters

John Lister's letter reminds me of his description of the chief executive of Worcester health authority as a 'doyenne of the 'stonewall' school of public relations' (letters, 29 July 1999).

I believe she has met her equal.

After asking for accurate information about bed numbers in Worcestershire after the completion of the new PFI hospital I received a reply from the chief executive of Worcestershire acute hospitals trust, which said: 'As an ex-NHS employee, you will be aware that bed numbers are not an accurate or sensible indicator of healthcare provision, and continuing this debate about statistics will not improve the healthcare of the people of Worcestershire'. For patients and staff of the three acute hospitals in Worcestershire the refusal to give these details and the reasoning behind it is hardly reassuring.
