Patients found to have falsely claimed exemption from NHS charges will be subject to penalty charges of up to £100 from 1 December, junior health minister Lord Hunt has announced. If patients cannot provide evidence they are entitled to help with charges they will still receive treatment, but claims will be checked afterwards. Patients found to have made a false claim will be sent a penalty notice telling them how much they need to pay within 28 days. The penalty payable is five times the amount of the NHS charge owed, up to a maximum of £100, plus the original charge owed. A further £50 will be added if the fine is not paid on time.
