Further to [lesbian chief executive] Carolyn Regan's reply (letters, 17 January) to Dickon Weir-Hughes ('Great barrier reach', 6 December), from personal experience it is easier for those with colleague support, or in positions of authority, to weather the storm of being an item of curiosity following such revelations than it is for those without.
Despite the welcome provision by trusts of harassment guidelines, it takes a confident person to withstand our colleagues' homophobic comments, frequently passed in all innocence. Ideally, it is not until they think how damaging these slips can be that more staff - from student to chief executive - can let it all hang out.
