Paramedics and ambulance workers at Avon Ambulance trust are to treat patients with a history of violence or aggression only under police escort. The scheme, based on a register of patients who have been violent, has shown that half of the trust's 245 staff have experienced violence or aggression during the past year. The trust is understood to be the first to take such action following the government's 'zero tolerance'policy introduced in 1999 to tackle violence towards NHS staff.
