Gillian Heaton, a former general nurse and health visitor, has been appointed director of nursing and operational services at Warrington Hospital trust. She was previously working at the North West regional office of the NHS Executive.

A retired police superintendent has been appointed chair of Plymouth Hospitals trust. Russ Mitchell, who served with Devon and Cornwall constabulary for 30 years, will takes over from Vernon Seccombe on November 1.

Mavis Foden, chair of Walsall Hospitals trust for the past eight years, has been re-appointed for a further year. Ms Foden, a Conservative councillor, was the only female chair appointed to a first wave trust.

Shirley Williams, a former chief executive of Oxfordshire Community Health trust, has been appointed as a non-executive director of Buckinghamshire health authority.

David Hall, a former chair of United Leeds Hospitals trust, has become chair of the NHS Supplies Authority. Ron Cooper, who retired in September after five years as chief executive of Royal Berkshire and Battle trust, has become a non-executive member of the authority.

Tom Keenan, a health social work manager at North Lanarkshire council, and Joseph Morrow, director of Angus Mental Health Association, have become part-time commissioners of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland.

Shelley Alge, a qualified social worker, has been appointed director of Milton House trust, an Islington charity providing programmes for drug and alcohol users.
