The 400 people who attended HSJ's Health Management Awards on Monday night got a pleasant surprise when Tony Blair swept in to present the first prime minister's award for excellence in healthcare management to Peterborough Hospitals trust. We thank him for demonstrating that his support for health service managers goes beyond the warm and welcome words he had for for our readers in the HSJ interview (pages 11-13, 7 November).

But our most heartfelt thanks must be reserved for those who entered the awards. As you will read in our HMA supplement, the shortlisted and winning entries comprise some of the very best work being undertaken in the NHS - and health service managers are at the heart of it. Congratulations to them all - not only for their own successes, but for helping to highlight the contribution of managers. They are achievements deserving of the highest praise - and the recognition of their worth is not before time.
