Former health secretary John Reid's local hospital is to lose its accident and emergency department under a£300m reorganisation of health services in Lanarkshire.

Mr Reid had campaigned to keep the department at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie open. But now his constituents will have to travel to Wishaw or Hairmyres, which fall in the Scottish Parliament constituencies of first minister Jack McConnell and health minister Andy Kerr.

Under the plans, agreed this week by the Scottish Executive, Monklands will have a 24-hour minor injuries unit but will concentrate on planned care.
