Public health minister Tessa Jowell has announced that the government is planning a national telephone helpline for pregnant women who want to stop smoking. The service will come into being when the contract for Quitline expires. This was due to happen at the end of the month, but Quitline will now continue until 'late summer' to 'ensure there is no gap'. Funding will come from the£50m public education package announced in the white paper, Smoking Kills.
