NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens will reveal his latest thinking on the future of the service in next week’s inaugural HSJ annual lecture.

The lecture, held in conjunction with advisory firm FTI Consulting, follows Mr Stevens’ victory in persuading the government to give the NHS a step-change funding increase. He is expected to use the lecture to further explore some of the key themes of last month’s NHS Five Year Forward View.

The event will take place in London before an invited audience of healthcare leaders at 5:45pm on 8 December. It will be filmed and broadcast on hsj.co.uk, with the full text published on the site soon after.

Copies of the lecture will be sent to the prime minister, the leader of the opposition, and all those with significant influence over the future direction of the NHS.

HSJ is launching the annual lecture to provide a high profile annual platform for a leading figure in healthcare to set out their long term vision for the UK’s health service.

The next five years could see the rapid introduction of new service models and contracting arrangements. An important element is for development of primary care, whether through GP practices evolving into multispeciality community providers, or foundation trusts delivering GP services as part of a primary and acute care system.

HSJ readers are at the forefront of addressing and implementing these changes, which have major implications for the financial and overall sustainability of the NHS. That is why in the run up to the lecture, HSJ and FTI Consulting are surveying clinical commissioning group leaders, trust chief executives and GPs to gather their views on the proposals. The results will be presented to Mr Stevens ahead of the event, to inform his thinking and published after the lecture.
