James Cochrane says that 'what is needed...is good research on what is more effective in changing smoking habits' (Feedback, page 23, 27 January).

The Health Development Agency's evidence briefing summary Smoking and Public Health published in May 2004 contains precisely this research.

It is a review of reviews of interventions to increase smoking cessation, reduce smoking initiation and prevent further uptake of smoking.

The briefing details the approaches which work best in targeting smoking initiation and cessation - the first time that systematic review-level evidence on tackling smoking has been brought together.

This evidence briefing is part of a suite of documents supporting professionals to tackle smoking.
