A nurse manager at a Cumbrian hospital has been suspended after a male stripper performed on a ward full of elderly patients.

Managers at North Lakeland Healthcare trust confirmed that Mary Carruthers, senior clinical nurse at Wigton Community Hospital, is under investigation and facing disciplinary action, though neither patients nor relatives complained.

The stripogram had allegedly been booked as a treat for a female colleague.

Nigel Woodcock, the trust's acting chief executive said: 'The management investigation is being concluded with a view to a disciplinary hearing being held as soon as possible.'

The Royal College of Nursing, which is representing Mrs Carruthers, has accused managers of over-reacting in the wake of the recent Commission for Health Improvement investigation into abuse of elderly patients at one of the trust hospitals.

An RCN spokesperson said:

'They're taking a sledge-hammer to crack a nut.'

Staff claimed that the elderly patients had appeared to enjoy watching the stripper and that they had even found it 'hilarious'.
