Nine out 10 patients can visit their GP within 48 hours and four out of 10 can get an appointment on the same day, according to a survey of 10,000 patients by Picker Institute Europe.

The survey, commissioned by the Department of Health, also found that 70 per cent of patients could make a doctor's appointment three or more working days in advance.

Health minister And Burnham said the survey showed that access to GPs 'is undoubtedly improving'.
