Partnerships may not normally expect gongs and glamorous accolades, but all that is about to change with the launch of the Sustainable Communities Awards by HSJ and sister magazine Local Government Chronicle.

The awards, run in association with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, are aimed at rewarding partnerships between service providers delivering a key government agenda - making neighbourhoods into places in which people want to live and work, now and for future generations.

A tall order? It is already under way in many areas. A first round of local area agreements were signed in 2004 and a second in June 2005, pooling over£800m from more than 100 funding streams.
