I was pleased to read Ian Wylie's review of The NHS Home Healthcare Guide (Books, page 35, 17 September).

I was also pleased to see that the NHS Executive is working with the Doctor-Patient Partnership and the Health Education Authority on the issue of public information.

However, as many health authorities have bought in a range of patient education materials called 'What Should I Do?' I was disappointed that the publishing company which produces them had not been brought into the partnership. The 'What Should I Do?' materials do look more interesting than a telephone directory, and they have been evaluated - so The NHS Home Healthcare Guide looks like another case of re-inventing the wheel.

I hope that the partnership will consider these points when discussing an update - and link it with NHS Direct so that integrated multi-media public information can be developed.
