The TUC was this week expected to adopt a policy of clear opposition to private finance initiatives.

A composite motion to be moved by public sector union Unison at the TUC congress in Blackpool, as HSJ went to press, was set to win the backing of other major unions.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: 'The composite also calls for a moratorium on PFI projects so the evidence we have to show it doesn't work, is more expensive and doesn't provide better services can be examined.'

Previously the TUC has taken a critical line on public-private partnerships but stopped short of outright opposition.
