A point arising from the HSJ Interview with junior health minister Lord Warner may need clarifying (pages 26-27, 11 December 2003).
Responsibility for national value-for-money studies will transfer from the Audit Commission to the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection on 1 April. The Audit Commission will retain the lead on financial management issues nationally, which reflect the commission’s expertise in this area.
However, the Audit Commission will also continue to be responsible for appointing auditors to strategic health authorities, trusts and primary care trusts - and for the code of audit practice under which they work, including local value- formoney activities.
We expect some of that activity to be undertaken at CHAI’s request.
We will also be agreeing that part of the code with CHAI when it is revised for 2005.
Andy McKeon Managing director, health Audit Commission
