The Department of Health has published performance data showing that waiting lists and cancelled operations continue to fall while the number of critical beds available is at a record high.
The number of people on the inpatient waiting list from January 2007 was 774,000 - 2,000 less than the previous month and 384,000 less than 1997. There were 3,359 critical care beds in January 2007, 2.5 per cent more than a year earlier and 42 per cent up on January 2000.
