FINANCE: University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire reported a deficit of £4.6m in July - £400,000 better than the plan submitted to the NHS Trust Development Authority at the beginning of the year.

July board papers say the trust is forecasting a £2.5m surplus for 2013-14 as a whole.

The trust was was 3 per cent over plan on its pay expenditure for June 2013, despite being 1.4 per cent below its budgeted income level.

“The specialties where we have experienced the greatest level of income underperformance are within trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology and a combination of general surgery, colorectal surgery and upper-GI surgery”, the board papers said.

“Critical care income is also under-performing year to date against plan (£972k) which is being driven primarily by an underperformance of neonatal critical care.”
