A large primary care provider is set to become the biggest GP partnership in England following its expansion into a second STP area, HSJ has learned.

Our Health Partnership, a super partnership based in Birmingham and Solihull, is set to take on nine GP practices in the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin sustainability and transformation footprint.

The practices will join OHP in May, increasing its population coverage from 285,000 to 370,000 – making it the largest GP partnership in England.

In line with the provider’s current model, partners of the nine Shropshire based practices will become partners in OHP but will retain their own GP contracts.

Once the new practices have joined, OHP will have over 200 GP partners operating across 42 practices.

HSJ understands the provider has approached Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group about working with the STP on primary care development.

This is the second large scale GP provider in Birmingham to announce expansion into another STP footprint in recent days. Last week HSJ reported that Modality, a super-practice based in Sandwell and West Birmingham, has taken over the running of four practices in Hull.

Jennie Bailey and Alex Chamberlain, GP leads for the practices in Shropshire, said “We very much support the ethos of mutual support and working together at scale while preserving the ability of local partners to run their practice in the way that best serves the needs of their local community, and we are looking forward to being part of Our Health Partnership in the coming months”

OHP chair Vish Ratnasuriya said: “Our organisation is built on strong principles of partner based general practice and we look forward to welcoming colleagues from Shropshire who share our ideals. I have no doubt we will learn much from each other as we work together to continue to develop our partnership.”
