PERFORMANCE: University Hospitals of Leicester will be financially penalised after two never events were reported by the trust in April.
Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group has said the trust will face contract penalties over the two events following a full investigation by the trust.
One incident involved a patient having the wrong cataract lens fitted during a procedure while the other saw a surgeon begin operating on the wrong finger of a woman suffering from osteoarthritis.
Both mistakes were identified and corrected immediately and the patients discharged as planned.
The amount the hospital will be fined is not yet known. The CCG has said it will consider the findings of the root cause analysis in both cases before determining the amount.
A spokesman for University Hospitals of Leicester Trust said: “Never events are extremely rare. These cases will be fully investigated and reports provided.
“No patients experienced any permanent harm and they were immediately informed.”
