SERVICES: A new short stay medical unit has been opened in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire.

The unit - run by South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT) Community Health Services Bedfordshire - has 16 beds supported by doctors, nurses, and therapists.

It will provide a ‘step down’ service for people leaving hospital with an expected average length of stay of five to seven days.

As well as the new unit, the service also has a consultant led team based at the Accident and Emergency Department at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital who will assess patients for suitability for admission to the new unit.
