Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust says it is taking a “zero tolerance” approach to pressure ulcers amongst its inpatients.

The trust has adopted a prevention over treatment approach to combat pressure ulcers and the latest board papers from September outline its new approach : “The trust will focus on prevention in the first instance; thereby reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers, both new and inherited, across BHFT. This will only happen if it is part of everyone’s daily practice.”

The papers go on to note: “The Trust is committed to embedding a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ to pressure ulcers occurring within the inpatient units as this is entirely within our control to prevent. Due to the complexities of working with patients in the community, there will be a focus on a significant reduction in all pressure ulcer damage.”

Category 2 pressure ulcers will be reported as SIRIs 3 and 4 to ensure they are investigated.
