Winner: University Hospitals of Leicester Trust

Like many other emergency departments, Leicester faced difficulty recruiting and retaining medical staffs at all levels. A dedicated international recruitment team was introduced to support, train and better integrate this group of staff.

In December 2015 there were no unfilled A&E shifts, and across the year there was an increase in the total number of filled training posts

The team reviewed induction and interview processes, introducing a three month supernumery induction to allow international staff to gain experience of NHS systems and national and local practice before being counted into rotas.

Other pastoral efforts included help with accommodation, banking, registering with a GP and cultural acclimatisation, including a welcome guide to facilities and surrounding Leicestershire area.

In December 2015 there were no unfilled A&E shifts, and across the year there was an increase in the total number of filled training posts. The international recruitment process is now embedded into practice and received acknowledgement in the Health Education East Midlands Quality Visit Report 2015.

Judges’ comment: A passionate team who take great care of their staff, focusing on their pastoral needs as well as their professional needs. They demonstrably celebrate diversity and talent and strive for international excellence.
