With the department developing an ambitious plan for social care, the direction Mr Behan steers will have profound implications for the NHS. Incentives for greater integration increase but the balance is difficult and delicate. Over the next few years, £3.8bn will be transferred from the NHS’s capital budget to fund adult social care. Implementation of next year’s report from the commission on the funding of care and support will be a huge task but shows how seriously this government is taking social care reform.
