With seven years in the job, the former KPMG man has an important role in the re-tooling of Monitor as the NHS’s “sector regulator”. But even without that onerous task, 2012 was always going to a busy year as the foundation trust pipeline begins to pump out applicants. The DH’s newly industrialised process for firing aspirant trusts through Monitor’s hoops will see more work for that part of his brief.

Meanwhile, the day-to-day controversies around compliance, another of his responsibilities, continue to see trusts complain, particularly on healthcare associated infection measures. Finally there is an expected increase in Monitor’s intervention in struggling trusts.
